Wednesday November 4, 2020 – We’re 8 sleeps away from the start of Tiger’s defense of his 2019 Masters championship. But, before players descend upon Augusta, there’s a tournament to be played: the Vivint Houston Open.
There were whispers that Tiger was going to be in the field, but those turned out to be false. But, it does bring about an interesting question: If you were a player, would you play the week before a Major or take time off to rest/tweak things with your team of coaches and trainers?
There’s no right answer, but there’s also no thing like the real thing. So, if it was the Cut Draw boys, we’d probably play.
132 players will be in Houston this week and the tournament has your traditional 36-hole cut. It’s a relatively strong field. Some guys who opted to play include Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Tyrrell Hatton, Tony Finau, Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia, and others. Lanto Griffin is the defending champion. If he’s looking to repeat, World #55 is going to have to bring it.
This will be the first time in quite a few months that these guys will be playing in front of fans as 2,000 spectators will be allowed in each day. LFG.
Memorial Park Golf Course was redesigned in 2019 by Tom Doak. He consulted quite a bit with Brooks Koepka during the renovation process. It’s a unique venue given that it’s a muni course located just outside of Houston where residents can get tee times during the week for around $30.
There are 5 par 3s and 5 par 5s on the par 72 track, which is not common although Sherwood Country Club had the same breakdown a few weeks back. The forecast looks great.
Other Tournament Details:
- Purse – $7,000,000
- Par – 70
- Yardage – 7,432

Do you want action on the Houston Open?
With familiar faces in the field, you’re probably feeling pretty good about your prospects for this week. I wish we could say the same. We haven’t necessarily been on a heater with our picks as of late.
So, rather than bore you with a bunch of different scenarios and hypotheticals (supported by shitty logic) that’ll never play out, we’re going to keep it simple stupid.
Take Brooks this week (20-1). He literally designed the course, he’s finally healthy, and you best believe he’s going to be dialed in ahead of Augusta.
