Wednesday May 2, 2021 – Days after his PGA Championship victory, Phil Mickelson stayed on a heater by announcing his next high profile event.

2021’s edition of Capital One’s The Match will feature Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady vs. Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers. Events details:

  • Date – July 6th, 2021
  • Broadcast – The event will be televised on TNT at 5 PM EST
  • Venue – The Reserve at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, MT

The Match isn’t a novel concept. Celebrity golf events have been around for decades.

For example, the Skins Game, was played for nearly 25-years prior to it’s cancellation in 2008. In this modified match play format, Freddie Couples won nearly $4.5 million in “skins” over the course of his 11 appearances.

Fast forward a few years (2017) and Hollywood agent Jack Whigham and producer Bryan Zuriff decided to make a run at reviving such an event.

Their goal? Appeal to the modern golfer: “…play the way a lot of us play with our buddies on the weekends. You know, where you bet on everything and talk smack and basically have this continually running dialogue of, pardon the expression, giving each other shit.”

Sounds like Cut Draw’s thesis, but I digress…

After securing talent and pitching the broadcast rights to a few media companies, Capital One’s The Match – featuring Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson – was born. The first edition was held in November 2018 at Shadowcreek Golf Course in Las Vegas, NV.

The 1st event was wildly successful and subsequent “matches” have been a yearly staple since then.

What’s the takeaway?
These made-for-TV specials, featuring some of sports most polarizing figures, represent a consumer shift: people like us have an insatiable appetite for raw, up-close access to our idols…regardless of sport.

…except if your last name is Paul. We’re good on that.
