Tuesday December 15, 2020 – Twenty former Major Champions and a family member will be teeing it up this week at the PNC Championship. And while the field is stacked, Tiger Woods has been stealing the pre-tournament headlines.
Not because he’s the greatest of all time and single-handedly drives up ratings and viewership, but because of who his playing partner is.
Tiger will be playing with his son, Charlie. Charlie is 11. And despite just starting middle school, Charlie would without a doubt embarrass us on the golf course.
But how Charlie plays isn’t what we’re interested in. Rather, it’s the expectations the golf world likely has of him…
Have any GOATS or Hall of Famers had children that went on to be better than them?
We can only think of the Mannings. Archie was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989, long before Peyton and Eli would win multiple Super Bowls…each. Peyton and Eli will both be Hall of Famers.
But, when it comes to golf, we’re at a loss.
Charlie’s dad is the GOAT. It doesn’t get any better than being the GOAT. So, in order for Charlie to be “better” than his pops, well, he’ll have to supplant him as the GOAT. And while we’re not ones to put limitations on anyone, it’s certainly an uphill battle.
It’d be easier if you were little John Daly (who is also competing this week btw). OG John was a stud in his own right. But in our generation, he’s more known for his play off the course, than on.
Whatever happens this week with Big Cat and Charlie doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. What does matter is Tiger’s approach to being a dad:
“It’s just an evolution. Like all kids, they go from one thing to the next. Right now, he’s into golf. But who knows, it could switch to something else. As long as he’s happy, he’s excited about whatever sport he’s in.”
